The new brownfield Terminal 1 is planned to be a 23 Gate international terminal on the footprint of existing T1, T2, and T3. It will be a 2.8 million square feet development on a 144 acres site. The new $7.3 Billion terminal is part of the $15 billion JFK Redevelopment Program launched in 2018 by the PANYNJ to implement Governor Cuomo’s Vision to transform JFK into a World Class 21st Century airport. The new terminal replaces the existing 10 Gate, 0.7 million square feet Terminal 1 situated on a 45-acre site. The existing Terminal 1 is to remain fully operational till the airlines can be moved to the new Terminal 1 in a 3-phase approach.
The project also involves integration of a new streamlined airport wide roadway network, the existing AirTrain (APM) within the new Headhouse and providing a unified landside/ curbside plaza experience.
DY Program Managers, Design Managers, and Project Managers serve as an extension of staff on-site to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) providing comprehensive technical, design, program, and project management services. The DY Team is responsible for the direction and management of all airside, landside, terminal, and support infrastructure projects from planning through design, construction, and turnover.
The DY Program and Design Managers coordinate daily with multi-disciplinary design and engineering teams, both in-house and external, to monitor alignment with the program objectives and vision.
Since the project’s inception the team has been involved with the development of the project definitions and programming documents.
We constantly manage a lean accelerated design review process for fast-tracked construction approvals. The process was changed to a 100%-electronic submittal procedure entirely programmed in the eBuilder software. The process has also been innovated with the integration of an Executive Committee Review ‘layer’, for expedited approvals while establishing conformity with the Authority’s Strategic Vision and Key Objectives.
Given the fact that JFK is an active international airport, the DY team consistently collaborates with the Construction Logistics and PA JFK Operations teams to keep the project design and construction schedule on track. The team also collaborates and coordinates with the PA AirTrain team to ensure that the impacts to the system are minimal and Maintenance of Traffic and Customer Experience mitigation measures are already in place.
We also work closely with the Program’s Document Control Team to recommend and implement Continuous Improvement Initiatives to improve and streamline the design and construction submittal process to meet all the program objectives.
