This project included all engineering services necessary to provide a design and construction package to procure bids for the site preparation, procurement, and installation of an Engineered Materials Arrest System (EMAS) Arrestor Bed System at both ends of Runway 5-23. DY Consultants was tasked to provide all professional services related towards preliminary design, intermediate design, final design, bidding and environmental permitting.
The EMAS was designed with the intent to stop the design aircraft at an exit speed of 70 knots. Consideration was given to reducing the exit speed capability to 55-65 knots or making other alterations to the design in case the EMAS system was not feasible. Typical aircraft currently using Groton-New London airport are the Cessna Citation X, the Gulfstream G-IV, the Learjet 60 and the Embraer Regional Jet – 135.
